Spicer works hard for midget points

Karting competitors from all over New Zealand took part in the 1986 3ZB — Versatile Garages "not the New Zealand championships” at Carrs Road raceway on Saturday.

It was the first time that such an event had been televised live.

The junior, midget and consolation lOOcc class had smaller entries than expected but what it lacked in numbers, it made up for in close racing.

The Christchurch driver, Myles Spicer, really had to work for his points in the midget class against Nelson drivers, Carl Chambers and Jason Richards. These three were joined in most heats by Richard Jones and Blenheim’s Heinje Herkt. The junior class competition was close in all four heats, with little between Bryce Coulbeck, Darren Drake, Mathew Lamb, Jason

Dell and Damien French. A consolation class for drivers of lesser experience turned out to be a success for a driver of only a year, Peter McLay. However he was kept busy by two drivers of similar experience, Nelson’s Gordon Jacket and Barry Malaquinn. Karts in the open class hit 140km/h on the main straight of 150 m. Auckland’s lan Bias, with the 125 cc Yamaha, dominated the series, but found the going fairly hard. John Hamilton put some early pressure on but blew up his 135 cc Italian engine. Graham Stevens, with a 125 cc Rotax engine was the only driver to beat Bias during the day. Results were (drivers from Christchurch unless stated otherwise). — J.B.L.
