Oaths of allegiance

Sir, — In 1948 I was one of a group of 36 men who enlisted in the New Zealand armed forces. When we took the oath there were only six or eight Bibles

available. There was some jovial jostling as we arranged ourselves to make sure that each of us got hold of his fair share of one of them. In a recent article In “The Press” on recruiting and training activities at the R.N.Z.A.F. base, Woodbourne, It was stated that only half of the recruits to the service chose to swear on the Bible. Of all the post-war changes that have taken place in this country, surely the loss of confidence in the established church is the most remarkable. After nearly 2000 years of the faith, the anti-Christ has triumphed in only a little over one generation. What can have been the reason? — Yours, etc., JOHN H. LENCH. Nelson, January 27, 1986.
