Cable-car proposal
Sir, —Surely flat Invercargill’s water tower or relatively flat Auckland’s Rangitoto could absorb the enthusiasm of gondola fans, and let Heathcote be a placid oasis. Inhabitants of polluted countries would relish what Kiwis take for granted. The late Antarctic veteran shipmaster of the Private John R. Towle, Captain G. D. Henry, of New Jersey, said “I would like to retire some place — like Heathcote, and raise chickens and things.” He died at sea. Glorious Canterbury panoramas are readily available from Cashmere, Clifton, Huntsbury and elsewhere — why gondolas? Widely-travelled, informed New Zealanders know that we have treasured priorities, those from polluted lands seek. The average tourists do not want the moon; they envy us. — Yours, etc., JOHN LESLIE. January 29, 1986.
