Meat works strike threat

PA Wellington The president of the Federation of Labour, Mr Jim Knox, is threatening to halt the entire freezing works industry unless industry tradesmen get a 15.5 per cent wage increase.

He said last evening that a huge strike by all freezing workers was likely to be announced on February 14 or soon after it, and would be fully supported by the F.O.L.

The move follows the indefinite adjournment of tradesmen’s pay talks on Friday. Meatworkers’ pay talks also have broken down.

Mr Knox said representatives from all freezing works unions had agreed to meet on February 14 to decide what action should be taken and when.
