Ginn wins play-off
NZPA-AAP Hobart Stewart Ginn won his fourth Tasmanian Open golf championship when he beat Sweden’s Magnus Persson at the second hole of a suddendeath play-off at Royal Hobart yesterday. The Hobart-based Ginn birdied the 18th hole after Persson had put a six-iron flyer through the back of the green. His victory in the $50,000 event sponsored by Foster’s followed other wins in 1980, 1975 and 1973.
Ginn and Persson finished on seven-under par 281 after Persson had gone into the final round with a threestroke lead over Ginn and a Queenslander, Jeff Senior. Ginn shot a one-under par 71 for the day, while Persson could only return a two-over
par m. Gale-force winds and rain made low scoring very difficult early yesterday, with the wind littering the course with branches, leaves and bark. Third was the veteran West Australian, Terry Gale, who finished two strokes behind with a 72-hole total of 283 after a final round of twounder par 70. Among those one stroke back was young New South Welshman Steve Elkington whose one-under par 71 included a $5OOO bonus for a hole-in-one. Elkington, aged 23, aced the par-three 127 m second hole to win the windfall from one of the tournament’s sponsors, Blues Union. Also on 284 were Greg Turner (N.Z.), Peter Fowler (N.S.W.), Jeff Senior (Qld), and Vaughan Somers (Qld).
