Fire at plant workshop
A fire broke out in a Christchurch painting contractor’s premises in Stewart Street last evening took firemen about 45 minutes to extinguish. Firemen were called to the fire about 11 p.m. although a bystander at the fire said he had heard what he thought was an explosion about 10.30 p.m.
Mr D. J. Crooks said he had heard a booming noise from Hagley Avenue and had eventually traced it to Neville J. Lucas’s paint contracting business. The Fire Service did not know the cause of the fire, last evening, but said that the damage was extensive. Seven appliances went to the fire.
