Five Canty athletes in N.Z. team

PA Wellington Five Canterbury athletes — two men and three women — have been named in the New Zealand cross-country team which will contest the world championships in Switzerland on March 3.

They include the husband and wife combination of Peter and Wendy Renner, who sealed their selection with fine performances in the New Zealand men’s 10,000 m and women’s 5000 m championships at Wellington on Saturday. In the 10,000 m Kerry Rodger, of Auckland, found form at the last minute to win the race and snatch a place, in the team.

The New Zealand selectors wanted fast track performances as references for team selection and Rodger’s winning time of 28min 55.40 s was made to order.

The Auckland athlete headed home his crosscountry team-mates, Peter Renner, second in 28min 56.195, Ken Moloney, Rex Wilson and a reserve, Ross Thurlow. Rodger’s Otahuhu clubmate, Debbie Elsmore, also faced with the need for a fast time on Saturday, ran 16min 3.70 s to win the women’s 5000 m ahead of Wendy Renner and Mary O’Connor (both of Canterbury).

The Athletics Association cross-country representative, Alan Stevens, said' the New Zealand team was one of the strongest assembled for a world championship. The women’s squad includes Sue Bruce, of Canterbury, who finished eighth at last year’s championship in Portugal, leading the New Zealand women’s team to seventh place over all. Christine McMiken finished 25th at Lisbon, Gail Rear 47th

and Mary O’Connor 64th. Rex Wilson, of Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay, was the best of the New Zealand men, finishing 55th as New Zealand finished .thirteenth out of 33 teams. John Bowden was 71st and Moloney 114th. Women: Sue Bruce (Canterbury), Debbie Elsmore (Auckland), Christine McMiken (Auckland), Mary O’Connor (Canterbury), Gail Rear (Northland), Wendy Renner (Canterbury). Reserves: Marguerite Buist (Waikato), Christine Morriss (Waikato). Manager: Jack Ralston (Auckland). Masseur-physio: Warwick Lightbourne (Auckland).
