New primary teacher positions filled
PA Wellington All the extra 500 primary teaching positions created in last year’s Budget will be filled when the school year begins tomorrow, says the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall. Most of the 80 new kindergarten positions would also be filled, he said. Two hundred of the primary positions were taken at the beginning -of the third term last year. Mr Marshall said reports
from district education boards showed appointments to all 300 positions required for the first term this year. “I am confident that most primary schools will start the year with a full complement of permanent teachers, although some schools may face difficulties when looking for staff for temporary or relieving positions over the next few months,” Mr Marshall said. Last year’s campaign to identify former primary
teachers interested in returning to the profession resulted in just over 2000 indicating an interest in returning to the profession. Of the 80 new kindergarten positions, 64 permanent appointments had been made, and the remaining 16 had been readvertised. . Forty existing positions were vacant. Most of these would be filled temporarily at the beginning of the year by a trained kindergarten teacher.
