McLeod easily wins Teddington race

Clive McLeod (St Martins), who has only been running seriously since last year, easily won the Teddington - Diamond Harbour handicap race in 48min 14s off the fourminute mark on Saturday. When McLeod was in front, a knowledgeable spectator yelled out, “you burglar,” as the St Martins runner also won the Olympic 16km Tai Tapu handicap race in October, last year. Not only did McLeod do well personally, but his club also fared the best in the warm weather, taking the handicap senior men’s,

senior women’s and veteran men’s titles.

Third person home, and first veteran man home, was John Dumergue, off 13 minutes, and sandwiched between him and McLeod was Peter Herbert (University), who considered that the heat would have been a big factor if the race had been longer. Sarah Farquhar (St Martins), off eight minutes, was the first woman home in 56min 345. A star of Don Cameron’s marathon clinic, she only recently joined the St Martins Club, having finished second in

the Invercargill Marathon in November in 3br 23mln, after a sprint finish to the line against the woman who won. Farquhar said her main goal was to learn how to run faster and then probably enter this year’s City of Christchurch Marathon. Kevin Barnes (Christchurch) continued to show fine form during the summer harrier season by completing the course in the fastest time of 38min 265, and Marie Stokes (Sumner), the veteran woman, who won the Soleares Avenue hill climb the previous Satur-

day, was the fastest woman runner in 47mln 465. Results: Men (handicap): C. McLeod, 48.14, 1; Herbert, 39.43, 2; Dumergue, 46.22, 3 and Ist vet; D. Caruther (Rovers) 48J8, 4 and 2nd vet; D.
