Top squad selected
Seventeen young athletes of unusual promise have been named in the New Zealand Permanent Building Society Canterbury track and field development squad. This number will be boosted to 25 by the end of the season. Those already in the national Chelsea squad were not eligible. The athletes, between the ages of 16 and 20, are:— Girls
Kirsten Downie (sprints), Joanne Best (sprints and hurdles), Caroline Barrie (middle distances), Megan Young (high jump), Kirsten Young (high jump), Tania Lutton (shot and discus), Claudia Hall (javelin), Kaye Nordstrom (javelin). Boys
Dougal Cockram (sprints), Scott Bowden (sprints), Craig Gallilee (sprints), Hayo Van Gestel (hurdles), Andrew Condick (middle distances), Michael Shaw (long jump), Stephen Moir (long and high jumps), Stephen Rollings (high jump), Richard Willetts (pole vault).
