New Honduran ruler
Jose Azcona has been sworn in as the new President of Honduras, and he promised to continue close ties with the United States and combat poverty in his country, one of the poorest in the Western Hemisphere. “To the United States of America, I reaffirm our friendship and goal of maintaining the ideals that unite us in the defence of pluralistic, participatory democracy,” Azcona said in his inauguration speech. Honduras, Washington’s staunchest ally in Central America, has turned into a bastion of anti-commun-ism over the past four years as the United States has established an extensive network of military installations.—Tegucigalpa.
