‘Batons, Mace urgently needed’

PA Auckland Traffic officers voted unanimously at three meetings yesterday to demand that the Ministry of Transport supply them urgently with means to combat assaults. The chairman of the motorway traffic officers’ sub-group of the Public Service Association, Mr Brian Williams, said that his group and those of Henderson and South Auckland voted unanimously to make the demand.

Members of the Takapuna, Mount Roskill and Auckland regional subgroups will discuss and vote on the issue on Monday.

Mr Williams said the officers who met yesterday called for Such protection as batons, Mace

cannisters and electronic devices which can administer shocks. The motorways group also wants the number of vehicles and men available at night to be increased. Commenting on a statement by the Deputy Chief Traffic Superintendent, Mr Henry Gore, that batons would not stop assaults, Mr Williams said they would deter people from committing the offence and would give traffic officers some form of defence.

“We are the only law enforcement body in the world with nothing with which to protect ourselves,” said Mr Williams. “I agree that batons would not stop assaults, but they would be some form of defence.”
