Tide warning to bathers
Bathers at east coast beaches this week-end should take extra care to swim safely because of outgoing tides, said the oc-ordinator of beach patrols for Christchurch, Mr Geoff Barry, yesterday.
The outflows would begin about 10 a.m. “During the weekdays bathers should also be very careful because the weekday patrol has ended,” he said. “People should remember the importance of safety in numbers while swimming and find out where the patrol flags were during the summer
patrol service, as these are the safest parts of the beach.” Tidal outflows left four people in trouble on two Christchurch beaches yesterday, Mr Barry said. “At Taylor’s Mistake beach three people got into trouble over a deep hole and had to be rescued by the beach patrol,” he said. "They were a man aged about 57, a teen-ager, and a pre-school girl. "At North Beach a young man raised his arm for the patrol to rescue him as the tide carried him out beyond his depth.”
