Man on feigned marriage charge

PA Auckland The police believe a Samoan went through a false marriage to his sister in a bid to stay in New Zealand. The Ranui man, aged 30, will appear in the District Court at Henderson today, charged with making a “feigned marriage,” a rarely invoked offence which carries a jail term of up to seven years.

West Auckland detectives said yesterday that they believed the man went through a registry office wedding ceremony with his sister, a New Zealand resident, thinking it would allow him to stay in the country.

“I have never dealt with one like that before,” said Detective Senior-Ser-geant Barry Pickering. After the man’s arrest yesterday afternoon the police were still looking for his sister.
