Escape of circus lions might be sabotage

PA Rotorua The escape of ' three lions from the Whirling Brothers circus in Rotorua on Thursday might have been the result of sabotage. Circus performers believe a poodle which was

deliberately put in the cage sent the lions into the frenzy which led to their escape during a matinee performance. Roads leading to the Rotorua lakefront were closed 1 for nearly two hours while the police and

circus staff tried to comer the lions and force them back into cages. The drama ended just before 4 p.m. when the third lion was persuaded back to his cage. Ministry of Agriculture staff, who are responsible for overseeing security at circuses, met the police and the owner of the circus yesterday to try to find what went wrong. A Ministry post-mortem examination showed that the dog was alive when she was put in the lions’ cage. The dog’s owner, Mrs Michelle Norton, was still upset yesterday. j “We don’t ; know whatt sort of maniac would do| this,” she said. , . ! The poodle, which had recently given birth to* five puppies, was earlier reported missing. Mrs Norton said she had received many offers of help from Rotorua people.
