Profits from the land

Sir,—l endorse Vernon Wilkinson’s concern for the conservation of our farming land. All farmers realise they occupy the land for a short time Only and in the end it is the nation’s asset It is the farmer’s duty to care for and nurture the land, not just to “mine” it for a quick profit. Our politicians, and most New Zealanders, have no conception of this and are creating a

climate which forces dedicated and genuine farmers out of business; Faceless business institutions could take over the land with big machinery sweeping over large areas of cash crops to make profits for unknown investors. The land has produced New Zealand’s every prosperity in the last 150 years. In the end only the land remains. Are we going to leave future generations an asset or a dust bowl to add to ’ the world’s ever-increasing deserts? — Yours, etc., J. P. ARMSTRONG. Rakaia R.D., January 28, 1986.
