N.Z. pilot’s family detained
NZPA staff correspondent Bahrain
An Auckland woman and her two sons were detained at Bahrain Airport on Wednesday evening because of Israeli stamps in their passports. They are Mrs Myrene McLeod and her sons Blair and Glenn. Mrs McLeod is the wife of Squadron Leader lan McLeod, who is on the general staff of the multinational peacekeeping force in the Sinai. Wing Commander Tony Metcalf said the detention was the first he knew of
New Zealanders being held at an Arab State airport since New Zealand began its peacekeeping work in the Sinai in March, 1982. He said there was no concern for the safety of the family. Immigration authorities in Bahrain simply demanded they stay within the confines of the airport. Mrs McLeod and her sons were expected to rejoin the R.N.Z.A.F. flight to Singapore later yesterday. They are returning home from the Sinai after visiting Squadron Leader McLeod.
