Power rise lower than expected

Central Canterbury Electric Power Board consumers will face a rise of 4 per cent in their electricity costs in April. This figure was achieved by budgeting for a deficit in the next financial year. The board’s chairman, Mr Murray Faulkner, said the money would be recouped from reserve funds.

The Municipal Electricity Department looks likely to raise its charges 7 per cent. “In setting the retail tariffs this year, the board had to take into

account the 4 per cent bulk supply increase set by the Government late last year, as well as its own cost inbreases in' materials; wages and salaries,” said Mr Faulkner.

“However, to achieve budgeted expenditure by drawing from reserve funds set aside for special projects, we have been able to keep the increase at a modest level,” he said. The North Canterbury Electric Power Board has yet to decide its new charges but they should be announced within the next few weeks.
