N.D. in command

PA Wellington Northern Districts yesterday played themselves into a strong position to secure their third outright win in succession, after two days of their Shell Trophy cricket match against Wellington at the Basin Reserve.

After taking the four first innings points when they headed off Wellington by 30 runs, Northern greatly strengthened their position by the close of play at 7.28 p.m. at 157 for three in their second innings. After losing the cen-tury-maker of the first innings, Russell Mawhinney, with the total just 10, Northern’s innings was greatly boosted by a second-wicket partnership of 84 between Lindsay Crocker (37) and the increasingly proficient David White.

Wellington’s principal bowler, Paul Allott, then removed Crocker and White in the space of 17 runs before Barry Cooper and Geoff Howarth, at last finding some form, added a further 46 in an ,h° ur before play ‘ended two minutes early. After Wellington’s un-

distinguished first innings batting Northern should be able to chase an outright today after accounting for Auckland and Central Districts in their last two games. Starting the day on 208 for eight, Northern added only another four runs before being dismissed in its first innings. Both wickets fell to Grant Cederwall, who ended with three in his first Shell game of the summer after knee surgery had earlier disrupted his prospects. NORTHERN DISTRICTS First innings L.
