Help for disabled

Sir, —Thank you for obtaining a policy statement from Mr Buchanan, of the Department of Labour (“The Press,” January 23). It is laudable that “assistance ... is determined solely on the assessed needs and aspirations of each individual.” Support for my assertion has come from “The Press” report (January 27) of the Social Welfare Depart-ment-sponsored huis in which a social worker is quoted as saying “a person needed to be a street kid or gang member to qualify for work ...” Anonymous because of possible repercussions — a public admission by a top governmental committee that discrimination and retribution exists. As the blind, deaf, and wheelchair-bound receive minimal help from the Labour Department, our needs must be assessed as being non-existent Government departments reflect Government policy and in 1986 it is still legal to discriminate against disabled people. ‘ — Yours, etak PAM CROTHALL. y January 27, 1986.
