New Brighton shops
Sir, — I suggest the businessmen in New Brighton come to grips and consider the local community and the need for allday Monday shopping as advertised some time ago, before it is too late. Except for a few dedicated businesses, most are quite content to mark time until their Saturday feast, thus leaving Monday as a dead loss. This, of course will change as soon as the more enterprising Linwood mall opens. The car parks and main mall are a disgrace with untold litter, dirty nappies etc., not to mention the every-day hassle of dodging bikes, skate-boards and dogs. Another need is to upgrade the footpath and sealing at the South Shore bus stop, along with more adequate seating for bus patrons. — Yours etc., DOUG JARDEN.
January 23, 1986. [Mr Noel Hobbs, president of the New Brighton District Business Association, comments: “We recommended to our retailers that from the middle of October we extend our trading week to include Monday. It would be fair to say that we were a little disappointed by the number of stores that did in fact open. Through mid-October to the end of November we had approximately 40 stores open and then in December this number increased dramatically with all stores open th*-Monday before Christmas. Werbelievc that we give good service to our local
community and in fact greater Christchurch by offering; a. 12?’ hour service on Saturdays (for) approximately 40 years) eight, hours a day from Tuesday to Friday and a how some i stores; open on Mondays.' It, must be.; appreciated that we differ? some? what from most shopping malls’; which have their trading hours,, controlled by a mall managed ment. Apprdxiihately half -of thfe‘ 150 to 160 stores 'in New Bright ton are'members of our associa-" tion and we .cannot force trading; mall once;a. weeVand at4line&. weagree thht thls is not ’sum* ; cient. Bicycles, skate-boards, etc.? are not allowed in the mall according to the city by-laws and this problem has been brought to ‘ the attention of the council.”] s
