Boost for N.Z.’s tennis showpiece
PA Auckland A change in. dates for some of the world’s major tennis tournaments promises to inject some real life into New Zealand’s showpiece.
The director of the Benson and Hedges Open, Mr Peter Gardiner, is just back from the United States, with the good news that the tournament at
Stanley Street will retain its traditional early January dates.
The best news is that the Australian open will now follow immediately after the Auckland event.
The Benson and Hedges will be played from January 5 to 11, with the Australian Open starting on January 12, and ending on January 25.
Mr Gardner has already spoken with some top players and the feeling is that several players will be keen to use the Auckland tournament as a warm-up for the open, and as their first event after the Christmas break. No other main tournament is scheduled for the week of the international New Zealand event.
