Peace movements
Sir,—Larry Ross is correct. “The Press” consistently maligns the peace movement and slants the news by printing unbalanced reports such as that by Keith Stafford in today’s issue. The two carriers he mentions are the only ones the Russians have. They are 30,000 tonnes each and have Harrier-type aircraft. Compare them to the 15 80,000-tonne giants operated by the United States. Each ship carries the equivalent of most European countries’ air forces. In last year’s Fleetex exercise the United States sailed a fivecarrier task force from Hawaii on a mock raid right up to Russia’s Pacific 12-mile territorial limit, an utterly stupid piece of brinkmanship. The United States has retained all the Pacific bases it acquired in the last war. Unless you are pre-
pared to present the over-all picture showing all the bases and naval forces in the Pacific you should desist from your blatant scaremongering. — Yours, etc.,
E. L. BARCLAY. January 25, 1986.
