EVAN GRAY, the Wellington cricket all-rounder, has had the unusual distinction of achieving career-best batting and bowling performances within three matches. Gray’s unbeaten 128 against Otago at the Basin Reserve on Monday was his fourth first-class century and two runs higher than his previous highest. Two Shell Trophy matches before that, against Canterbury at Lower Hutt, Gray had returned his finest analysis of 14 wickets for 151 runs with his left-arm spinners. His innings figures were six for 114 and eight for 37. . THE FORMER WELSH rugby union captain and scrum-half, Terry Holmes, is having a painful initiation to rugby league with Bradford Northern in the British championship. A dislocated shoulder ended his debut on December 8. Last week he returned, as a member of Bradford’s second XIII against Batley. This time Holmes was assisted from the field in the forty-second minute. Though he left the ground with his arm in a sling, club officials were tight-lipped when asked if Holmes had suffered a recurrence of his previous injury.
