Strong reply by England B cricketers
NZPA-Reuter Colombo An unbroken opening partnership of 81 between Wilf Slack and Martyn Moxon enabled England B to make a strong reply in the second four-day Test against Sri Lanka yesterday.
At close of play on the second day the touring side, replying to Sri Lanka’s first innings eight for 428 declared, were 81 without loss. Slack was on 41 and Moxon 34. Earlier Sri Lanka, resuming at their overnight 231 for two, added just one run before Arjuna Ranatunga was caught by Chris Smith, off Derek Pringle, for 52. The skipper, Sidath Wettimuny, added 22 to his overnight 116, putting on 47 for the fourth wicket with Roshan Mahanama, before being bowled by the paceman Jonathan Agnew. An enterprising fifthwicket stand of 79 between Mahanama and Sanath Kaluperuma kept the Sri Lankan score moving and enabled Wettimuny eventually to de-
Clare after 155 overs. Kaluperuma, dropped in the slips while on nought, struck nine fours before he was bowled by spinner Nick Cook for 70. Mahanama made 58 with five fours. Pringle was the pick of the bowlers, with three for 72 off 35 overs.
