Aust, league to be beamed worldwide

NZPA-AAP New Orleans Australian rugby league will soon be seen in thousands of homes around the world, following a television deal with the European Sky Network. The Australian Rugby League executive chairman Mr Ken Arthurson announced the deal yesterday after it was secured at meetings held in New York last week.

The arrangement, an exclusive contract with the European Sky Network, will see the weekly match of the round from the New South Wales Winfield Cup Premiership telecast to over 14 European countries. The telecast will be a one hour compilation provided by Network 10, which holds exclusive rights to the Winfield Cup

competition. Mr Arthurson, who is in New Orleans with the New South Rugby League Chairman, Mr Tom Bellew, for the NFL Superbowl said: “The response for the world’s sport media has been incredible.. “At long last, the sport which is enjoyed by thousands of Australians, will be beamed into the homes of millions of sports fans around the world,” he said. Arthurson also announced that final negotiations had taken place with the American television giants E.S.P.N., and that the contract was expected to be completed soon. . Both contracts are effective from the beginning of the 1986 rugby league season.
