Clydesdale team’s harness
Sir, — I was delighted to read in "The Press” that Dominion Breweries was re-establishing a team of six Clydesdale horses, mainly for show purposes and promotion. However, for the record, the team will not, as stated, be “sporting the traditional bells, breastplates, medallions, ribbons and plumes.” The harness of these beautiful animals is usually adorned with a double martingale from which hang the horse brasses or amulets, the flyer, which is the brass mounted above the brow of the horse, the hames piece or hames plates at the top of the collar and various other assorted brasses on the front and rear of the harness, including a brass rosette on the side of the brow band. On occasions ribbons or bells are substituted for the rosette on the apex of the brow band. A properly decked out Clydesdale will carry an extra 3.51 b of brass as adornment to the harness, a truly magnificent sight. — Yours, etc.,
R. H. HAMMOND. January 23, 1986.
