Scott Base huskies
Sir, — I was going to suggest that Mr Bob Thomson slaughter the huskies at Scott Base personally, with television coverage matching library films of baby seal bashing, but there has been some change of heart. I would have thought mutton, beef and horse dogfood could have been spared from here to save the seals. (Anyway, I was assured putting down only old and injured seals provided an oversupply of dog tucker — meat keeps for ever down there.) It is a pity dog-lovers and Antarcticans do not have the political clout of the perverts who have persuaded our health authorities to place no restrictions on the entry and freedom of movement of deadly A.I.D.S. sufferers, contrasted with the infinitesimal risk of rabies in dogs virtually quarantined for generations. Patting the whole line of salivating huskies at Scott Base might explain why I feel like biting so many people. — Yours, etc.,
VARIAN J. WILSON. January 24, 1986.
