China aims to double beer output
NZPA-Reuter Peking China aims to double its beer production in the next five years to cope with growing demand, the Xinhua News Agency said. It quoted a Light Industry Ministry official as saying the target was to make six billion litres of beer a year by 1991, the equivalent of 5.5 litres a head of population.
Beer output has risen more than seven-fold since 1978 as Chinese living standards have improved. Shortages now occur regularly in summer. Breweries in Peking, Harbin, Qingdao and other cities have launched expansion schemes and efforts are being made to import modern brewing technology.
