Chris Cox repeats hill climb success
Chris Cox (Olympic) made it two in a row when he won the Soleares Avenue hill climb in 19min 48sec., on Saturday, having led the field home in the Royal Family of the Mountains 11km race the previous Saturday. Cox described the Soleares race as “the final burner” before competing in next week-end’s Coast-to-Coast endurance race, although he said he would be training over the Deception-Minga stage two section of the triathlon yesterday as part of his final preparations.
Greg Clark (Toe H) was second in 20min 15s, having clawed his way from eighth place in the short flat section before the long climb. Marie Stokes (Sumner) was the first woman runner, finishing in 25min Bs, the veteran runner taking over from
her clubmate, Colleen Bardsley, who has made the Soleares Avenue hill climb her preserve in the last few years.
The race was run in ideal weather — cool and misty, with 64 taking part. Results: Men: Cox, 19.48, 1; Clark, 20.15, 2; R. Campbell (Christchurch) 20.30, 3; P. Herbert (University) 20.35, 4; A.
