Man drowns after yacht capsizes

PA Tauranga A Tauranga man was drowned when his 7.3 m yacht capsized several kilometres off Bowentown on Saturday night. He was Michael Garner, aged 23, married, of Ohauiti Road. Mr Garner and four companions were sailing from Tauranga to Whitianga in the yacht when they broke the main boom. They then turned back to Tauranga to make repairs. The yacht/was capsized by heavy'|eas about 7.10 p.m.

Mr Gamer drowned and his companions left him and managed to swim ashore on Matakana Island in spite of the extremely rough conditions. Wreckage from the boat has washed ashore. Searchers for a fisherman missing on the Coromandel Peninsula found only his umbrella today. The Auckland man went fishing from rocks at Hot Water Beach, south of Whitianga, on Saturday in atrocious weather. His name has not been given yet.
