‘Pinocchio’ by children
“Pinocchio” presented by the Pierrot Players, at the Shirley Community Hall, January 25-Febru-ary 1, running time 2 p.m. — 3 p.m. Reviewed by Elody Rathgen. The Pierrot Players were formed by Sara Brodie, who aimed to produce children’s theatre directed and performed
entirely by children. Sara, now aged 15, has decided to hand over running of the group to the younger members. So it was Claire Silvester’s first production for the Players; , she had alsokwritten the material, f These young people i have a very dedicated
and efficient approach to their work. Staging is kept simple but effective, and scene shifts are well planned and executed. They have rigged up simple lighting and sound, all of which they work themselves. The large cast, aged from about five to 13, carry off their roles with confidence. Voice production is clear, movement is well planned and the play progresses at a good pace. Outstanding in the cast are Andrew Soutter, Lorraine De Vere, Debbie Dalzell, and Melanie Barker, who has the leading role of Pinocchio.
The production pays attention to detail with some well-designed properties, especially in the Candyland scene, and some authentic costuming. The Pierrot Players are providing an excellent training ground for young Christchurch actors and actresses. This production includes singing and dancing, so they are gaining useful experience in many aspects of theatre work. They must be encouraged by the full house on Saturday and the prospect of good bakings for the rest of the fSteek, the last of the school holidays.
