Tennis format change

NZPA-Reuter New York

The Masters tennis tournament will change to a round-robin format this year, guaranteeing at least three matches for each player, according to the Men’s International Professional Tennis Coun-i cil (M.1.P.T.C.). The Masters, to be played from September 3 to 8 at Madison Square Garden, will be an eightplayer round-robin event,

the M.I.P.T.C. announced yesterday. Each match will be the best of five sets.

Although the M.I.P.T.C. did not give reasons for the change, many tennis experts believe that John McEnroe’s elimination in the first round of the just concluded Masters was a big factor in coming up with the plan to guarantee the public at least three appearances by each player.
