Stormont in for profitable day

Special correspondent Auckland The Pukekohe horseman Michael Stormont could well be in for a profitable day when he travels north for the Northland Trotting Club’s meeting at Ruakaka today.

Stormont trains Regional Bromac and Smooth Jack, which will probably start favourite in their respective engagements.

Regional Bromac has often showed rare brilliance, being able to unleash an irresistable finish if saved for the last run at the leaders.

Two starts back, at

Rotorua on December 31, Regional Bromac stormed home late to score a convincing win in the Rotorua Cup and he followed that up with a meritorious third to Mer Man and John Paul at Cambridge on January 8.

On that occasion Regional Bromac raced well back in the field and rattled home late for his placing. His effort was all the more meritorious when the winner recorded a swift lmin 59s for the mobile mile. He will start from the 20m in the Marine North Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Traitor’s Gate, a winner at the meeting last year,

could be the hardest for Regional Bromac to beat. He had been racing most consistently before taking on the best four-year-olds over the Christmas period.

The Smooth Fella three-year-old, Smooth Jack, has drawn well at No 1 in the first Max Harvey Mobile Pace, the first leg of the T.A.B. treble. A half-brother to the good trotter, Peddler (by Tudor Hanover), Smooth Jack recorded what is believed to be the fastest ever time in qualifying heat at Cambridge when he took 3mln 9.8 s for 2400 m from a standing start on January 14.
