Two good bowls wins for Johns

PA Auckland Bernie Johns of Christchurch made the most of his late invitation to play in the annual Manurewa Bowling Club’s pairs tournament, with two good wins on the opening day yesterday. Called in to replace the injured Neville Poole of the Sumner club, Johns, with Lance Main as his lead, beat the 1985 national pairs runners-up, Lou Cancian and George Benvenuti. Johns, in his second game in the Macleay Duff tournament, was even more impressive, defeating the national fours champion Nic Unkovich and Rowan Brassy 22-10. It was not a good day for Benvenuti. ? In his second game, he came in convinced he had beaten Jack Wallbutton and Dean Stewart from the host club 18-17. When the card was checked, however, it was found they had played only 20 rather than the 21 ends. The four players went out again and Wallbutton picked up a four to take the game 21-18. The defending title-holders Jack Somerville and Neville Rishbridge had two good victories. i They had a 21-19 win over

the Christchurch pair; Sonny Calder and Ken Watson, members of the Linwood four narrowly beaten in the fours final at the Rothmans national championships earlier this month. In their second game; Somerville beat the top pair from the host club, Barry Drabble and Dave Emlrali, 2i-i7. ......; t Peter Beiliss and hfs Aramoho club-mate, Keith Slight, already three times winners of the event, had good wins over Danny O’Connor and Peter Thorne, and later over another Manurewa pair, Neville Hawken, and lan Mackie. The former national pairs champions Ivan Kostanich and Pat Robertson (Helensville) were in commanding touch. ' ■ ' ’ They beat Mai Brown and 1 . George Shaw, 24-16, then raced away against lan Hausman and John Rogerson to win, 37-8, after leading 22-0 after only nine ends. ■; Phil and Philip Skoglund; winners two years ago, had a 32-5 win over Lionel Drew and Tam Logan, of Manurewa, but went down 923 to Ivan Botica and Ivan Marsic. ■ “
