$63,000 for goat

A top price of $63,000 was paid for an eight-year-old Angora buck at the Lands and Survey Department’s eighth annual sale of Waitangi Angoras in the Bay of Islands. The buck, Waitangi Noble, was bought by a Hastings farmer, said the Mohair Producers Association’s publicity director, Mr Rob Aitken. The sale grossed $1.6 million, compared with $5 million last year. The average price paid for animals was $6lOO.

About half the buyers were new Angora goat farmers, which was good for the industry, Mr Aitken said. More than 1000 people attended the auction, run by Dalgety Crown, Ltd. The average price paid for two-tooth bucks was only $6315 compared with $33,000 last year; for registered mixed age does $5706 compared with $20,000 last year; and for two-tooth maiden does $BOB6.
