Athletes out to qualify
Commonwealth Games qualifying standards will be the target of several athletes when the Canterbury track and field championships begin at Queen Elizabeth II Park today. The gold medallist in the 3000 m steeplechase at the Pacific Conference Games last year, Peter Renner, is hoping for a time faster than the qualifying standard of Bmin 32s in what might prove to be his only outing this summer in the steeples. He will probably miss the New Zealand championship because of the world cross-country championships in Switzerland. There will be special
interest in the performance of the former 1500 m specialist, Michael Gilchrist, who is planning on improving on the time of Bmin 48.12 s he achieved in his first race over 3000 m in the steeples last Saturday. He, too, has his sights fixed on a qualifying time, although his main aim this summer is to qualify in the 5000 m. Two Commonwealth Games contenders, Karen Forbes and Lyn Aben, are expected to battle out the Canterbury heptathlon championship today and tomorrow. Forbes, who represented New Zealand at the Brisbane Commonwealth Games, is now starting to make progress after recovering from an
injury suffered a year ago. The senior men’s decathlon is likely to go to the robust Old Boys allrounder, Peter Henry, who is the defending champion. A score in excess of 7000 points is not beyond him. The fastest woman 400 m runner produced by New Zealand, Kim Robertson (Auckland), will make an unexpected appearance at Queen Elizabeth II Park today as part of her Games buildup. Robertson was unable to get the racing she wanted in Auckland because of the Australia versus New Zealand secondary schools meet-
ing there. This prompted her to contact Canterbury officials, who were happy to include a 400 m race on the programme today.
A New Zealand representative sprinter at the Los Angeles Olympics, Robertson is understood to be stepping up to the 800 m for the Edinburgh Games later this year.
She will also contest at least one other sprint event today. In this she can expect strong competition from Bev Peterson, who was runner-up in the New Zealand 100 m championship last season, Nicky Doyle, and Vicky Lewis.
