JOHN GRAY General Manager and Town Clerk CHEVIOT COUNTY COUNCIL NOTICE OF RESTRICTED FIRE SEASON PURSUANT to the provisions of Section 22 (2) of the Forest and Rural Fires Act, 1977, and Section 3 of the Cheviot County Fire Protection ByLaw, 1975, a Restricted Fire Season is hereby declared throughout that part of the County of Cheviot covered by the North Canterbury Catchment Board except during the following hours: From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day. This'Restricted Fire Season shall commence on Saturday, January 25,1986, and continue until March 31, 1986, unless It Is sooner cancelled or modified and during this period the lighting of fires in the open air In the county is prohibited except pursuant to a permit. However, during the hours excluded from the Restricted Season, namely 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day “safe fires” — e.g. stubble, hedge clippings etc. can be lit without a permit, but on the following conditions: 1. No such fire can be lit In a strong wind or conditions likely to spread the fire, or to present a fire hazard. 2. The fire must be patrolled until it is completely out or cannot spread. 3. Before lighting the fire, occupiers of neighbouring properties must be notified. 4. Stubble areas to be burnt shall be completely sur- . rounded by a ploughed fire break not less than six metres in width. NOTE: Hill Country Fires: Burning off on hill country shall require the permission of the North Canterbury Catchment Board AT ALL TIMES. It Is emphasised that lighting a fire in accordance with these provisions Is not a legal defence against claims for damage which may be caused by the fire — the responsibility for Its control and the liability for any damages which might arise He with the person lighting the fire. At any time during the fire season, a total ban may be declared on all burning In the open. In this case, the ban will over-ride any other permits or restrictions Imposed by this notice. Barbecues: Properly constructed barbecues (but not open cooking fires) may be used In safe conditions without permits provided all combustible material Is removed from the ground within a radius of three metres of the container and a water supply is available If required.
