Jobless to be 70,000?

PA Wellington The Minister of Employment, Mr Burke, says unemployment could rise to 70,000 by the end of March. Commenting yesterday on the increase in registered unemployed of nearly 3000 to a total of 54,085, Mr Burke said the rise was consistent with what the Government had been saying for some time. He predicted, that registered unemployment would rise further over the coming months. A figure of 70,000 would, however, be far

short of the 82,000 estimated under the previous National Government, Mr Burke said. “When vacation workers are excluded, registered unemployed is 2336 less than at the same time last year, and schoolleaver unemployment is down by over 1200 on the December, 1984, figure.” Mr Burke said a clear demand still existed for skilled labour and that job prospects for schoolleavers remained healthy, particularly in larger urban areas.
