Sir Hamish to seek re-election
The Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, will seek re-election for a record fifth term in office. He has told the Christchurch Citizens’ Association that he is willing to offer himself as its Mayoral candidate in October. His selection for the candidacy is considered a formality.
The Citizens’ Association had not received any other inquiries or nominations, said its chairman, Mr Newton Dodge. “We are very pleased Sir Hamish has made himself available,” he said. Sir Hamish said the next council term was certain to be a period of considerable change for local body organisation in Christchurch. “I believe that I can play a constructive role in the developments which will evolve over the next
three years,” he said. His many years of experience in local government would enable him to continue to make a worthwhile contribution to the progress of Christchurch, he said. Sir Hamish, aged 58, was first elected Mayor of Christchurch on October 25, 1974. He had been a city councillor since May, 1959. He said he felt physically able to handle another term of office and had the full support of his wife and family in the decision. There were still things to be done in the city, he said. Cr Alex Clark was named in December as the Labour Mayoral candidate. It is expected that Sir Hamish will be announced as the Citizens’ Candidate in about a month.
