St Puckle dead
PA Hamilton St Puckle, the sire of the first $1 million Melbourne Cup winner, What A Nuisance, died this week at Sam Brosnan’s Oakland Stud, Matamata, at the age of 23. Imported to New Zealand in 1968 by Dick Holmes, also of Matamata, for the Oakland Stud, St Puckle became one of the most successful yet underrated stallions at stud in this country. He proved his ability to sire top horses, being represented by the'Sydney Cup winner Oopik, and other stake winners in Kenann, Rare Commodity, Peter Puckle, Lady Sue, Kutzbah, Suspicion, No Expense and What A Nuisance. In recent years, St Puckle had also shown himself to be a more than useful broodmare sire, with his best representatives being the dams of fine gallopers Al Dwain, Belmura Lad and Puckle’s Harbour. St Puckle was never particularly wellpatronised by broodmare owners but throughout his stud career continued to sire a steady flow of winners. He was mated with just 12 mares last breeding season.
