Toll charges

Sir,—Telephone subscribers hoping to cash in on the new discount rates set out in the pamphlet distributed last month should be made aware that these reductions do not apply to international calls. This fact is not made clear in the pamphlet. A simple sentence to clarify this point would have been more honest and would have cost Telecom nothing.—Yours, etc., NATALIE B. CARLISLE. January 15, 1986. [Mr G. B. Ware, the acting Deputy Chief Postmaster, Christchurch), replies: “The Post Office confirms that reduced rates do not apply for international calls. Time differences between countries keep international communication systems busy throughout the day and night and it costs the Post Office the same for an International call, irrespective of the time of day. The point was not specifically made in the pamphlet because it was felt that the table of charges on the last page of the pamphlet clearly indicated the range of calls to which the reductions apply, and the rates shown are those for calls within

New Zealand. The necessarily brief information was in no way intended to mislead, and the Post Office is sorry if some confusion has occurred. Subscribers are Invited to contact the Post Office (Telephone No. 738-599, ext. 259) if any further information or clarification is required.]
