Job creation schemes
Sir,—Nothwithstanding what Mark D. Sadler (January 23) was told by the young woman, her work was not paid for out of the city’s rates. The City Council provides administrative support, payroll preparation, accounting facilities etc., for some 350 organisations within our community of greater Christchurch, sponsoring their applications to the Labour Department for Government funding under the various job-creation schemes. The organisations are charged by the
council for the full cost of the administrative support, while the wages paid are fully recovered from the Government. There is no charge against the rates. Whether the peace committee in question was the Christchurch Peace Forum or the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone Committee need be of little concern to city ratepayers. Both organisatioins are funded under the Government voluntary organisation training programme scheme. — Yours, etc., MATTHEW J. GLUBB. Chairman, Policy Committee, Christchurch City Council, January 24, 1986.
