Surgery spurs success

Results showing a pass in School Certificate human biology and a certificate of achievement in Form 5 at Hagley High School are held by Mr Sydney Nicholson, aged 56, of Christchurch, who returned to school last year. After surviving a bad car accident five years ago and three heart bypass operations last year, Mr Nicholson decided it would be appropriate to

study human biology as “something to do” while he was recuperating. Although his family thought he was “mad,” Mr Nicholson said he fitted in well with the pupils and two adults in his class. Mr Nicholson was accredited the subject with a mark of 90 per cent, but decided to sit the examination. He was disappointed with gaining 67 per cent

Mr Nicholson said he had been interested in how the human body functioned, since working as an auxiliary nurse in a London geriatric hospital in 1979. Although born in Liverpool, Mr Nicholson has lived in New Zealand many years, and now has six children and" six grandchildren here. He plans to visit relatives and friends in Britain in March.
