Military chiefs accused of undermining review
PA Wellington The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament says retired and serving military chiefs are trying to undermine the defence review. A campaign spokeswoman, Ms Julie Crosland, said yesterday that defence chiefs were using the A.N.Z.U.S. row as a scapegoat for their previous lack of planning. Statements that the row had left New Zealand militarily unprepared were wrong because the Armed
Forces had been run down by the last National Government, she said. “The military chiefs are unable to contemplate a role for the New Zealand Armed Forces which is purely defensive,” she said. The existing defence system was based on offensive weapons for use in concert with American and Australian forces, Ms Crosland said. Examples were New Zealand frigates and Skyhawks.
Recent statements were
an attempt to scare the public and the Government into accepting greater military expenditure on weapons inappropriate to the defence of New Zealand and the South Pacific, she said.
Ms Crosland said the defence review was a valuable opportunity for all New Zealanders to have a say in defence policy.
The defence review is an investigation into New Zealand’s defence policies and possible directions.
