Brazil has to play dirty: Zico
NZPA-Reuter Rio De Janeiro Brazil may have to abandon some of its sparkling soccer and “play dirty at times” to win the World Cup, says the Brazilian striker, Zico. In an interview with the weekly sports magazine, “Placar,” published yesterday, Zico said: “I think we must worry about the result of a match rather than to just show our dazzling skills. We need someone to play dirty at times.
“We missed someone like that in Spain (at the 1982 finals). We cannot always play clean, worry exclusively about playing soccer, as Tele (Santana) demanded from us. Italy, for example, had Gentile, who had no pity when he wanted to hit an opponent”
Zico also said he thought Brazil must change its style of concentrating exclusively on open football.
“Offensive football may be pleasing to the eye but does not help win games. You cannot open spaces because your opponents will inevitably take advantage of the gaps,” he said.
