Top base runner in doubt
PA Auckland The brilliant base runner, Karen Mills, may be unfit to play for New Zealand against the United States in the world women’s softball championships this morning. Mills, whose speed around the bases has earned her the nickname “Wheels,” was injured twice yesterday in the championship match
against Canada. Sliding into second base while stealing first to second, she aggravated an ankle injury first suffered in an earlier match in the series. Mills, on returning to the dug-out after being batted home by Carol Moore, found she had grazed her back in the slide. In the sixth innings,
Mills repeated her third innings base stealing, but in successfully stealing two again hurt her left ankle as she slid on her back. The ankle injury forced her to be carried from the diamond.
She was given immediate ice-pack treatment, but it had not been decided last night whether she would be available for today’s game.
