Twelve Gauge ready
PA Levin Twelve Gauge, ridden by his race rider, Tony Allan, rounded off his Wellington Cup preparation in grand style at Levin yesterday morning. Working from the top of the straight in company with a stablemate, Mr Teen, the Silver Blaze gelding ran 800 m on the plough in 48.95, - the last 800 m in 37.45. The trainer, Walter McEwan, was delighted
with the grey’s effort and is confident he will stay the 3200 m of the Cup. A race rival, Rose and Thistle, with his race-day jockey, Phillip Mercer, also worked from the top of the straight coming home quietly over the last 1000 m in Imin 5.85, the last 600 m in 395. The third Cup contender, Imaprince, was restricted to beach work. According to the trainer, Bill Calder, Atrapar, which worked on the beach, is in good order.
His regular rider, Maurice Campbell, will ride the Adios II gelding in the Jarden Mile tomorrow. Another Trentham contender to work well was the Pevero mare, Grand Romance, from the Bill Masters stable. She worked impressively, without over-exertion, over 1200 m, the last 1000 m in Imin I.ls (600 in 36.25). Stablemate Paoakalani also hit out well over 1000 m in Imin 4s, the 600 in 38.85.
