Cup rivals shape well at Awapuni
Special correspondent Palmerston North The Wellington Cup candidates, Gold Lomond and Fort Cheval, worked so well in training at Awapuni yesterday that it will be a surprise should either fail to play leading roles In tomorrow’s feature at Trentham. Silver Elm and Magnitude indicated they will be right in the finish of the Jarden Mile with sound trials and Inclusion impressed when preparing for the Egmont meeting at Hawera. The course proper was fast with the pegs out 12m and the plough was also in good order. Gold Lomond ran 1400 m on the. course proper, recording Imin 31s for the distance, coming from the 1000 m in
Imin 6s, and the last 600 m in 375. He is at peak fitness. Fort Cheval started from the top of the straight on the plough, which is a little more than 1600 m. However, the chestnut showed he was in the right order by coming the last 1000 m in Imin 5.65. Macloud, another candidate for the race, ran 800 m with Shades Of Dark in 49.25, the last 600 m in 36.15. They galloped on the course proper.
Celerina partnered La Mimique for 1000 m on the plough in Imin 4.85, the last 600 m in 39.75. Inclusion worked keenly throughout his 1200 m on the plough, recording Imin 16.25, the last 800 m in 50.25. He is
fit and well and must appeal, especially in the weaker class of the Diamante D Improvers at Hawera. Wellington Derby candidate, Waterman, worked over a round of the plough with Rapsea in Imin 35.25, the last 800 m in 53.4 s and the final 600 m in 39.85. Rapsea will race in the T. H. Walker Handicap at Hawera. Silver Elm and Private Poppy impressed with a smart gallop over 1200 m in Imin 16s, coming the last 800 m in 50.75. Magnitude was partnered by Lacka Reason in a 1000 m trial on the plough. They ran the distance in Imin 3.75, the last 600 m in 38s. Garbo worked over 1200 m in Imin 18.75, the last 600 m in 38.75.
