Noble Note, a South Island form runner for the Wellington Racing Club’s Jarden Mile tomorrow, wound up for that race with a pleasing sprint on the outside of the course proper at Trentham yesterday. The star of John Bourne’s Riccarton stable showed sharp acceleration to reel off the last 600 of 800 in 35.35.
Although he had started in leisurely style he still came up with 49.3 s for his 800
ioble Note’s third beh; id Harbor Flo in a r cord-run 1400 on Mon- < ay keeps him to the forefront among the prospects about the middle of the handicap for tomorrow’s Glamour Metric Mile. The Ashburton-trained Bacton Abbey, the only South Island runner in the Wellington Derby, led the Riccarton-trained Firetint by two lengths ending 1600 in Imin 46,85, the last 800 in 49.25, the final 600 in 365. Hy-etint will havener
only start for the Wellington meeting in the Pinehaven Handicap tomorrow. She won in style over 1600 m at Kumara two starts back and her record is now two wins from five starts. Duanette’s Girl and the Riccarton-trained Samasaan claimed much of the attention of the training in their final gallops for the Evening Post Wellington Cup.
Duanette’s Girl had her race rider, David Peake, up when she galloped 1600 m with ’the Derby hopefuls, Sharp Ace and Regimental March. The pace was too solid for Regimental March, which started to drop away early in the run home, but Duanette’s Girl and Sharp Ace went to the post strongly, almost on terms, completing the 1600 in Imin 45.25, and cutting out the last 600 brilliantly in 35.85. The Matamata trainer, Jim Gibbs, was pleased with the effort of the American-owned Duanette’s Girl. “She’s a funny little tart, but she’s working along all right,” Gibbs said yesterday.
In The Glen, the Riccarton mare which goes into the Jarden Mile as winner of her last four races, started near the 1400 on the outside of the course proper and Ray Coster allowed her to quicken for the final 1000 in Imin 7.25, and the final 600 in 37.55.
The Timaru Cup and Kumara Nuggets winner appears to have thrived on the trip. Later, In the Glen’s stablemate, Samasaan, was paired with a Cam-bridge-trained Derby candidate for 2000 m on the plough. Scaler, with the inside running, held a short lead over the Riccarton stayer through the first 1200 m but there was nothing between them at the end. They quickened for the last 600 in 395.
Samasaan was showing a touch of soreness after a brush with the running rail in the Trentham Stakes, but there has been nothing to concern his trainer, Garth Jackson, in the last few days.
The keenness Scaler showed during his task yesterday could be re-
fleeted in a bold bid for Wellington Derby honours.
Scaler, an Avaray colt from the Cambridge stable of Ray Cleaver, was considered unlucky in his latest race at Avondale. Scotch and Dry, unbeaten in two starts so far and favourite for tomorrow’s Fitzherbert Handicap, sprinted 800 in 51s on the outside of the course proper. She impressed when quickening for the final 600 in 355.
Royal Lad and Shardalure appeared to be evenly matched while running their 800 in 48.55, the last 600 in 34.85. Kerry’s Mate showed sharp speed to complete 600 on the plough in 35.85. The Waikato trainer, Graeme Rogerson, believes his Brazen Bay mare was unlucky not to reach one of the places in the highweight last Saturday.
Debbie Dee was one of few to gallop on the trial grass. In the hands of her Trentham trainer, Bill Wylie, she returned 49s for 800 m and 35s for the final f°’
